Summary

New York Times bestselling and Eisner-winning author Mariko Tamaki reveals a potential future state of Gotham, a militaristic reality that rivals 1984

Welcome to the possible future state of Gotham。 The Magistrate, a freelance military and surveillance corporation, has been hired by Gotham's leadership to turn the old city into a futuristic surveillance state free of vigilante-based crime/heroics。

Batman, horrified to see what his city was becoming, fought tooth and nail against Magistrate--and they killed him for it。 Or did they? Bruce Wayne survived this assassination attempt, and has been laying low for years now trying to sort out how to beat Magistrate。 The only problem? He doesn't think he can anymore。 They're too big, they're too powerful。 And the latest horrific revelation? They have EYES EVERYWHERE。

It's left to Batman for one last mission。 Destroy their command center, expose the drones, and free the city。 Whatever the cost。

I only actually read the 4 issue Dark Detective storyline and not any of the other ones which is probably like 1/3 of the overall pages here but I can't find a listing for just that by itself so I guess I'll rate it here。 Really only picked this up because it showed up on my new releases radar since I've read other stuff by Tamaki and I thought it was just a little one shot and didn't realize that not only was it several stories in one book but also that it was only one volume of a larger altern I only actually read the 4 issue Dark Detective storyline and not any of the other ones which is probably like 1/3 of the overall pages here but I can't find a listing for just that by itself so I guess I'll rate it here。 Really only picked this up because it showed up on my new releases radar since I've read other stuff by Tamaki and I thought it was just a little one shot and didn't realize that not only was it several stories in one book but also that it was only one volume of a larger alternate timeline thing。 The story was fun enough - the art was good and I feel like Tamaki does a good job writing Bruce's voice - but ultimately didn't really go anywhere。 Not sure if there is eventually a satisfying 'end' to this somewhere but I'm not into it enough to go digging into the other character arcs to find out。 I generally try to stay away from mainstream comics/characters unless it's actually a one shot and unfortunately that is not really what this is。 That'll teach me to read summaries better in the future ;) 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Dark Detective: ★★★★★ I mean, you can't go wrong with the Dan Mora + Mariko Tamaki team-up here。 Dark, serious, brooding, and yet still so engaging。 To reiterate, Dan Mora can do no wrong。。。loved every single panel。Red Hood: ★★ How could you, Jason?? I get the drive for justice and anti-hero thing, but this one seems like too much of a turn to the dark side。 Can't see him turning his back on the bat family like this, and is what the Magistrate is doing really justice? Dark Detective was cool and had some great art! I'm pretty out of the loop regarding the state of the DC Universe, so I'm not honestly sure what's going on that created this Future State, but it seems interesting。 Catwoman wasn't bad, didn't overstay it's welcome, and I also quite liked the art。 I'm guessing some of these stories take place in between other stories in other collections, because I was still a bit confused with where this was following Dark Detective。I skimmed the others。 The Batm Dark Detective was cool and had some great art! Dark Detective - 5/5 The art here is stunning and the story was a fun switch up for Bruce Wayne/Batman。 My main issue was I was left wanting more。 Red Hood - 3/5Short little story about Jason Todd in this Future State era。 I really enjoyed the art but the story was obviously a backup。 Half interested in the Future State: Gotham series now though。 Batman/Superman - 2/5Ben Oliver's art is just plain ugly。 Also a story about a serum that makes your face into a animal。 It was very blah and really no Dark Detective - 5/5 The art here is stunning and the story was a fun switch up for Bruce Wayne/Batman。 My main issue was I was left wanting more。 Red Hood - 3/5Short little story about Jason Todd in this Future State era。 I really enjoyed the art but the story was obviously a backup。 Half interested in the Future State: Gotham series now though。 Batman/Superman - 2/5Ben Oliver's art is just plain ugly。 Also a story about a serum that makes your face into a animal。 It was very blah and really not that fun。 Catwoman - 5/5 This is the best part of this book。 Hats off to Ram V and Otto Schmidt cause they put in work on these two issues。 Train heist with Catwoman and many other guest appearances。 A must read。Harley Quinn - 3/5I really enjoyed the art and the designs for the characters。 The setup and idea of the story was a lot of fun but something just felt missing。 Robin Eternal - 4/5This one caught me off guard。 I was coming to the end of the collection and I really enjoyed this series。 Eddy Barrows art really kicked this story into something worth reading。 Another one that I wanted more of。 。。。more

The other half of Batman's Future State adventures are collected in this trade。The Dark Detective stories themselves are much better than the Next Batman ones。 They don't actually go anywhere at the end, but then this is Future State, and not the main continuity, so I'm not too surprised。 Tamaki's grasp on Bruce's voice is nice, and Dan Mora art is always going to be a delight。Catwoman's mini is one I wouldn't have minded seeing more of, as regular series writer Ram V does a bang up job sticking The other half of Batman's Future State adventures are collected in this trade。The Dark Detective stories themselves are much better than the Next Batman ones。 They don't actually go anywhere at the end, but then this is Future State, and not the main continuity, so I'm not too surprised。 Tamaki's grasp on Bruce's voice is nice, and Dan Mora art is always going to be a delight。Catwoman's mini is one I wouldn't have minded seeing more of, as regular series writer Ram V does a bang up job sticking Selina into Future State while retaining all the plot points that have made her ongoing series so good。 Otto Schmidt on art is, again, a delight。The Harley Quinn mini-series was surprisingly good; I wasn't planning on reading this to start with, but it really leans into Harley's psychiatrist background as she psycho-analyses her way into annoying the Scarecrow。 Stephanie Phillips is writing the new Harley ongoing as well so this definitely made me want to check that out, and again, another delight on art with Simone Di Meo - his Future State Gotham is beautifully neon。Robin Eternal's a bit of a let-down, but mostly because it's all set-up for the titular event and then doesn't get a lot of time to do anything with it。 20 pages to get to the punchline's not a great look。 And I don't actually remember what happened in Batman/Superman, which doesn't bode well for it either。So three great stories, one decent one, and one that didn't make an impact。 We're still evening out at 3 stars, but this is definitely on the higher end of the entire event, and if you only check out one Future State Batman book, I'd make it this one。 。。。more

This was a whole lot of fun for me! I really enjoyed that all the titles in this collection follow an overarching story about Gotham's future and the struggle against the Magistrate。 My only real gripe is that since Future State is really all about possible futures we don't get any real full closure on the fight against the Magistrate (although I think I heard that one of the Infinite Frontier titles might explore this more?)。 I would honestly read a bunch more about this future Gotham。 This col This was a whole lot of fun for me! I thought seeing a more desperate and down on his luck Batman was really fun。 The storyline was fun, it wasn't the best Batman story of course, but I had a good time。 I think it was smart for them to give Tamaki 4 issues to tell this story over the more typical 2 issue limit Future State titles were given。 It gave Tamaki time to truly explore the impacts of Gotham's horrible future on Batman, and let us see him really get small steps ahead of the Magistrate during his investigation。 Grifters: 4/5Grifters was the back up story in both DD issues #1 and 3。 And it was a blast! This story balanced action, adventure, and comedy really well。 I've never been a huge fan of Grifter。 Not because I don't like Grifter but because I've never been that interested in the series he has been part of。 Well, now I'm super excited to see what DC does with him in Infinite Frontier。 I think the best part of this story was the dynamic between Lucas Fox and Grifter。 They made me laugh a lot and I'd honestly like to see them paired up again in the future。 Also major love for including Helena/Huntress <3 My only gripe with this one is (view spoiler)[that Lucas Fox betrayed them and was working with the Magistrate。 I mean。。。it kind of makes sense given the context and the situation for the character, but it felt kind of out of left field for him。 It almost left a bad taste in my mouth。 Almost (hide spoiler)]The Red Hood: 4/5First off。 ROSE WILSON!!!!!!!!!!!! Rose Wilson is my ultimate favorite comic book character of all time。 I just fucking love her so much。 I think the writing for her in this comic was a mixed bag for me though。 I think she was freaking awesome, badass, and funny。。。but I don't love what she was up to。 I really just miss her Teen Titan's days。 Yeah yeah yeah she was never a GOOD GUY but she wasn't BAD either。 Didn't any of these comic writers read Ravager Fresh Hell?? Well, they should。 And then they should write more Rose Wilson comics like that。 But I digress。 This was a good time。 I really liked seeing more innerworkings of the Magistrate and seeing how that was all impacting criminals(hello White Rabbit, oh and FYI DC this new White Rabbit look is wonderful and you should keep this going forward)。 Jason Todd was Jason Todd。。。bad boy with angst。 I'm really here for all the Rose Wilson content (her outfit was deluxe)。 OH! AND I'D REALLY LIKE TO SEE THIS ISLAND OF SLADES THEY KEPT MENTIONING。 This one ends with a "to be continued。。。" *ominous music plays* so I guess we might still get some more Future State Gotham in the future after all? Catwoman: 5/5 THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN。 I never knew I needed a Catwoman steals a train story。。。but I NEEDED a Catwoman steals a train story。 I really liked Selina's characterization in this one as well。 Seeing her go full hero was a good time and she kicked some major ass。 Also, I am a sucker for any comic that explores her and Batman's relationship。 This was one of the most solid Future State books I've had the chance to read。 It progressed the Magistrate storyline/Batman storyline really well。 It felt completely natural to read this after the Dark Detective, they really managed to keep a cohesive story going between these miniseries which I really appreciate。 Harley Quinn: 2/5My biggest disappointment :( I'm a big Harley fan so this one really stung。 I will say on the positive side that I loved the depiction of Harley in this story。 Super thankful that they utilized her intelligence and her knowledge of psychology。 While also giving her times to be zany, wacky, and hilarious。 I think the concept for this was great but the execution was really poor。 Harley barely had any agency in this which was just disappointing。 She was kind of just there? Locked in a cell for most of the first issue and once she was out? Still a prisoner until the end。 I didn't feel like I truly got a taste of what the future had been like for Harley or what the future will hold for her next。 It was very meh。 And that sucks。 Robin Eternal: 3。5/5Another fun entry! I love Tim Drake。 Love him。 I had a lot of fun with this story。 It wasn't anything incredibly special but it was a really good time and I think it built well on the Magistrate and Future State Gotham mythos。 Plus it gave us more insight on the status of several different Bat-Family characters, which was appreciated。 Plus I love any inclusion of Stephanie Brown/Spoiler。 I also really enjoyed the new character Darcy, I'm hoping she shows up in Infinite Frontier。 Batman/Superman: 3。5/5Another fun one。 I really appreciated the way this one answered several of my burning questions about what was going on in Gotham。 Why didn't Superman show up and help liberate the city? What about other superheroes? Well。。。now I know。 And it suckkkks for Gotham。 The inclusion of Professor Pyg in this one was fun too, a nice way of showing where this one stood in the timeline of events (Prof Pgy shows up in the Harley story too) and I really enjoy anytime the writers had overlapping storylines or characters。 It makes everything feel more connected and grounded。 。。。more

There have been very few DC books that I've enjoyed over the last few years but the premise of Future State sounded interesting, so I decided to pick up the isues that made up this trade and see how they held up。While the different series vary in quality, they vary from Pretty Good to Very Good。 While nothing is amazingly incredible, nothing is unreadably bad, either。 This collection focuses on Gotham dealing with the mysterious fascist leader, Magistrate, his drones and assassins。 We see it fro There have been very few DC books that I've enjoyed over the last few years but the premise of Future State sounded interesting, so I decided to pick up the isues that made up this trade and see how they held up。While the different series vary in quality, they vary from Pretty Good to Very Good。 While nothing is amazingly incredible, nothing is unreadably bad, either。 This collection focuses on Gotham dealing with the mysterious fascist leader, Magistrate, his drones and assassins。 We see it from the perspective of Batman/Bruce Wayne, Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Harley Quinn/Catwoman, Robin/Tim Drake, Grifter/Cole Cash, Batwing/Luke Fox, Red Hood/Jasom Todd, and Ravager/Rose Wilson。 It's an intriguing bridge from the Dark Night Death Metal era-DC books and the Infinite Frontier。I think this will be a decent jumping-on point if the future DC books are worth reading。 It also serves as a pretty good ending to the Nu-52/Rebirth/Death Metal DC storylines。 。。。more

Dark Detective was boring。 Harley Quinn was pretty good, as was Robin Eternal and Batman/Superman。 Catwoman I was indifferent towards。 A mixed bag, just like the other Future State Batman volume。 3/5 stars

Future State: Dark Detective #1 comes from writer Mariko Tamaki, artist Dan Mora, colorist Jordie Bellaire, and letterer Aditya Bidikar from DC Comics。 This new title within the Future State lineup explores a Gotham City where Bruce Wayne is presumed to be dead, and a new technologically advanced military organization called The Magistrate has risen in Batman’s wake。 This sets up an interesting premise and showcases this entire creative team as cohesive storytellers。 Bellaire on art gives off in Future State: Dark Detective #1 comes from writer Mariko Tamaki, artist Dan Mora, colorist Jordie incredibly colorful and vibrant pages。  She gives off a purely futuristic aesthetic with a staple cyber-punk color palette of neon pinks, yellows, and greens。 Bellaire tastefully utilizes the compute glitching effect to add atmosphere with her coloring, and it’s a small detail that aids in adding tone。  While these coloring aspects may be a trademark of the subgenre, this still feels new to past lovers of anything Gotham-centric。 Mora weaves interesting use of panel work to enhance both Tamaki’s writing and Bellaire’s colorwork。 For instance, there is a part where Bruce is depicted in his Batman alter ego and the Magistrate。 The new organization that Gotham is now utilizing to enforce law and order is standing in front of this image of him。 There is a small window on the bottom right to show how Gotham City is looking at the Magistrate through a news lens, with a smaller long panel showing how people react to the information。 Mora’s sense of narrative momentum through his art is what’s makes his art a joy to look at。 Tamaki holds no punches back when it comes to having this presumed-dead Bruce Wayne ask complicated questions about his wealth, status, and influence on the high-tech police state Gotham has become in his death。 Many of these ideas are surface level and straight forward, but the execution of her writing works in tandem with the art, colors, and letters that provide an effective backdrop to the start of this storyline。 I am excited to see where it goes, and I fully hope Tamaki continues to deepen these intriguing questions and trails her Bruce Wayne could explore。 For as much as I loved Future State: Dark Detective #1, there was a glaring issue with it。  On page 25, the story shifts to an entirely different creative team for a segment called  No Future Past Part 1。 It comes from writer Matthew Rosenberg, illustrator Carmine di Giandomenico, colorist Antonio Fabela, and letterer Antworld Design。The lettering of this second story makes it difficult to read。 Grifter, aka Cole Cash’s vigilante name, our protagonist, has his dialogue as white text in red speech boxes。 The shade of red that is used is a true read that blurs and bleeds together in a way that detracts from wanting to look at the page。 To further the lettering issues, there is an instance where Lucius Fox is speaking to Cole where his speech is in a light grey text that I initially skipped until I realized that the text color was too light to make anything out。 While being hard to read, Rosenberg doesn’t write Grifter to be interesting to read。 Grifter, as opposed to being multidimensional,  is written with the stubborn, cocky superhero attitude。 His help is at the cost of his attitude, and his fighting is mostly sharp words and gusto。 There were some interesting ideas about the Magistrate attempting to round up all of the past caped heroes and vigilantes。 For instance, the idea of a tech-military organization hunting down caped crusaders provides a perfect backdrop for an exploration of law vs。 justice。 However, it gets bogged down in attempting to shove Grifter as a hardcore, angsty vigilante。 I am not sure why Future State: Dark Detective #1 wasn’t a stand-alone issue without No Future Past Part 1 because it severely detracts from how good Future State: Dark Detective #1 is。 I feel deeply frustrated that this was two separate stories shoved into a $5。99 book when Tamaki’s 24-page intro into her depiction of Gotham was stellar。 I wish DC would have let it stand on its own two feet because it has an intriguing premise, phenomenal color work, fun lettering, and great artwork。 Whereas the second story falls flat, its characters are troupe heavy and feels like a step-down。 Overall, this leaves me confused and disappointed。 I want to clarify that the Future State:  Dark Detective #1 half is worthwhile and a great new entry in the Future State lineup, and I hope the next issues are standalone。 Future State: Dark Detective #1 is
